In 2016 over 335 million tons of plastic were produced globally with less than 1% being biodegradable. Management of waste plastic is an increasing problem endangering ecosystems with 75% being landfilled or ending in the natural environment, including 8 million tons annually into seas and oceans. Even in the EU, with the most stringent regulations, less than 32% is recycled, the rest incinerated, landfilled or exported. However, 2018 ban on import of waste by China is making waste exports difficult for developed economies.

Cities around the world need ways to divert plastic waste from landfills and incinerators. Lack of space, more stringent regulations or outright ban of dumping of plastic, leakage into water ways and natural environment, and long duration for decomposition, makes landfilling problematic. Incineration is very capital intensive and one of the most expensive methods of energy generation and waste elimination. Burning plastics generates almost three times the greenhouse gas emissions as recycling and merely captures 20% of the energy available in plastic.

By using plastic waste as a feedstock to produce fuel, Handerek Technology reactors provides a sustainable alternative to the challenges of plastic waste disposal and create valuable products from otherwise non-recyclable waste.
